Chinook II Charter Fishing Report – July

We’ve had a real mixed bag of weather recently, but fortunately on most days we’ve still been able to get out to the fishing grounds and catch a few fish. There’s been some cracking sport to be had, with a whole host of different species available to be caught.

On calm days, when the sea has been flat, the Smooth Hound have been around in numbers and just last week we boated our biggest of the season so far, a cracking fish of 14lb, landed by Ashlet Willmot from Stow Maries. This specimen Hound fell to a ledgered Hermit Crab in some shallow water, it was also just one of 20 fish we had on the day, with fish upwards on 8-9lb! Fish of this size fight extremely hard and really tested some of the anglers I had on board!

As you’ll probably remember I mentioned in my last report that the Mackerel had disappeared, but I’m pleased to say they are back again, and in big numbers! There are lots of them around and full strings of fish, on feathers have provided some great action and fun!

The increase in Mackerel has also seen an increase in the number of Tope, as gradually more and more are beginning to show, following the Mackerel shoals. These toothy critters are the ultimate sporting test in our waters and at this time of year there’s a chance of a really big fish. The best bait is obviously Mackerel, however the odd fish has also fallen to large Crab baits.

There are still lots of Bass around too, with good fish showing up on most days. On some rare occasions and if you are lucky, these fish can be landed on lures and feathers as they congregate in large numbers ‘shoaling’ the bait fish.

Offshore there are still Thornbacks being caught, a majority of these are being landed by anglers targeting the Hounds, so Crab, Squid and Hermit have been the successful baits.

Prospects for the next couple of weeks are looking fantastic, with what looks like record Mackerel numbers, we could be in for a bumper summer season! So if you fancy a trip just don’t leave it too late!
