Chinook III Charter Fishing Report – April II

The last fortnight has seen settled weather and this has allowed the charter boats to get out and give our anglers some excellent sport.

There are now big numbers of thornback rays inshore, these hard fighting rays are coming inshore to mate and spawn, best baits are squid, herring, mackerel and all other fish baits.

There are still odd cod around, some nice whiting and pouting, the piers are fishing well on the big tides for thornbacks, whiting, odd dab and sole mainly falling for worm baits.

Offshore is improving all the time with the first of the smoothounds starting to show, these hard fighting sport fish are everyone’s favourite and can be caught right through the Estuary all summer, best baits are crab and ragworm.

We ventured further off shore this week and were rewarded with some excellent mixed fishing with smoothounds, thornbacks, whiting, cod and some cracking spurdogs, best of which fell to Steve Turner at 15 lb. These aggressive and strong sharks come into the Estuary March to May although they stay well offshore, best baits are squid and mackerel.

Prospects are superb as more summer fish start to show and we start to see some Bass as well.
