Chinook III Charter Fishing Report – April I

The wind has been a real feature of our weather recently but we've still managed to get out on most days. Even though the wind has been fairly strong, and offshore, we've not been too badly affected, as the majority of the fish have been on the closer inshore marks. This has enabled us to fish effectively and anglers on board have enjoyed some fantastic sport, with a good mix of Cod and Thornbacks.

Over the past few weeks the Cod have really been feeding well and there has been a good run of 4-5 lb fish, with some cracking Thornbacks up to 14lb, mixed in. Most of these fish are falling to Squid and Lugworm cocktails, with the Thornbacks preferring anything 'fishy'.

As well as the larger species there as also been some nice nice whiting, with some fish up to nearly 2lb, these cracking specimens have been falling for anglers Cod and Thornback baits, however if you wanted to specifically target them, then you won't go too far wrong with a nice fresh piece of Mackerel.

When we've been able to get offshore the fishing has also been very good, with once again a mix of Cod and Thornbacks being the main target. There's been no real reports of bigger fish, but we are now coming into the time of year when anything is possible and every year around this time the odd 20lb+ fish is landed.

The Estuaries and Piers have been fishing well for a mix of Whiting, Codling and Dogfish and even the odd school Bass has started to show. The best time to wet a line has been on the bigger tides and good quality Lugworm and Squid baits have yielded the best results.

Prospects look good; the Cod should remain with us for at least the next couple of weeks and the numbers of Thornback should increase as time goes on, meaning there are plenty of options for anglers on board.
