Chinook II Charter Fishing Report – September

There has been a big influx of Skate/Thornbacks to all areas over the last week, with some big catches reported, most of these fish are females but it won’t be too much longer before the males also start to move in.

There are still plenty of Smooth Hound offshore, although most of the fish showing are smaller, as by now most of the real big females have begun to move off, however saying all that last week we still had fish well into double figures. The best of these was a cracking fish of 17lb taken by legendary guitarist Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac, this fish was a personal best for him and he was absolutely delighted!

The best baits for the Smooth Hound has been Hermit and Ragworm, while the Thornbacks have been mainly landed on Squid and Mackerel.

Offshore there have been a few more Bass around and throughout September we will be fishing the banks to try and tempt a specimen before they all move South for the winter. As well as the Bass there has also been plenty of Thornback, Smooth Hound and not many Dogfish, which is good, as it enables your baits to fish longer for the better fish.

The fishing inshore has started to improve with good catches of Thornback, with Whiting, Eels and small Codling mixed in, hopefully these Codling will increase in both numbers and size throughout September and into October.

From the beaches and piers it’s a similar story, with the area’s of Clacton and Walton producing mixed bags of fish on the bigger tides.

Prospects seem excellent for the coming months and September is without doubt one of our best, with the Autumn species now starting to show you just never know what you might catch!
